Older Unit Information

Unfortunately, as technology changes so does the ability to service older models. ZZW, F-90, F-90H, D-10 meters are no longer serviceable. Learn more about new systems by visiting our Product page, or contact us for details.

Troubleshooting

  • +If I have two units, can I run both at the same time?

No.  The unit will read both temperatures and become confused.

  • +My Outside Temperature reads EEE

EEE means there was a loss of signal between the outside unit (OU) and the inside unit (IU). Occasionally the signal will drop and this is normal. However, EEE for more than 15 min per occurrence and more than 3 times a day is abnormal.

Loss of signal can happen for a number of reasons but usually its power or reception related.

    • Replace the batteries. Bring the OU inside and replace the batteries with known good ones. Lithium batteries perform even in the most extreme temperatures, making lithium batteries perfect for extremely cold or hot conditions where alkaline batteries typically cease to function. Use Lithium batteries (2 AA x 1.5v) at temperatures down to -40°. After replacing the batteries, ensure the LED is blinking once every minute and the outside temperature is reading a sensible number.
    • Inspect OU circuitry and wiring. Broken wires or corroded battery compartments will result in power loss.
Ensure the OU is within 75 feet of the IU.
    • Metal siding will reflect the signal and can cause loss of signal. Try placing the OU near a window so the signal can enter the building easier.
    • Point the OU bull’s-eyes toward the IU to ensure the greatest alignment.
  • +My temperatures reads in the mid 80’s (or 800’s) when it’s cold outside and/or the decimal point is missing.

This means the main logic board has malfunctioned and the IU needs servicing. Please send the IU in for service and the unit will be repaired with 1 week.

  • +My Outside temperature reads bbb

bbb means the batteries are low and need to be replaced.

    • Replace the batteries. Bring in the OU and replace the batteries with known good ones. Lithium batteries perform even in the most extreme temperatures, making lithium batteries perfect for extremely cold or hot conditions where alkaline batteries typically cease to function. Use Lithium batteries (2 AA x 1.5v) at temperatures down to -40°. After replacing the batteries, ensure the LED is blinking once every minute.
  • +My Degree Days are advancing more (or less) than expected.

The algorithm used to calculate degree days is much more complicated than the High-Low method and slight variation to what is expected is normal.

If the unit is displaying EEE, the unit will calculate incorrect Degree Days. Read “My Outside Temperature reads EEE” above for help.

  • +My unit advances more than 100 DD per day

Advances of more than 100 DD per day are not normal and indicates there is a problem with the IU’s main logic board and needs servicing.

Please send the IU in for service and the unit will be repaired with 1 week.

  • +The numbers on the screen appear faded.

(note: this is different than missing characters)
Sometimes overtime the LCD connector needs cleaning. Please send the IU in for service and the unit will be repaired with 1 week.

  • +Some characters are missing from the display.

(note: this is different than faded display)
The display will not stop at zero (0000) if BACK is pressed and will display 7748 as negative 1 and continue to count down until the 7 turns into ‘h’. This is mentioned on page 5 of the owner’s manual in between bullets 6 & 7 of the screen guide.

    • Press and hold FORWARD past 7748 and the display will pass 0000 so positive numbers can be added.
  • +My Degree Days aren’t advancing

    The unit will only count DD’s on screen 1, 7, & 8.

    • Use the MODE button to access these screen. See page 6 of the owner’s manual for the Screen Guide.
    • Make sure the slide switch by the power cord is in the UP position. Down is for programming as found on page 2.
    • If the unit is displaying EEE, the unit will calculate incorrect Degree Days. Read My Outside Temperature reads EEE above for help.
